Leading doctors at the Mayo Clinic proclaimed in a 2003 paper that “endothelial dysfunction may be regarded as the 'ultimate risk of the (cardiovascular) risk factors.'" It was identified as the missing link between cardiovascular risk factors and subclinical atherosclerosis.
